Episode 12: How to Deal With Hunger While Dieting
Unpopular opinion: You may not ALWAYS need to immediately honor your hunger cues… especially if you’re on a weight loss journey.
Feeling hunger is not necessarily a bad or negative thing, and in fact, it’s common and normal when you’re in a calorie deficit, which you must be in to lose weight. However, you definitely do NOT have to suffer and struggle with extreme hunger pangs to get results, and that’s part of what I’m discussing today.
This episode is for you if you’re interested in nutrition and ways you can enhance your satiety (aka feel less hungry between meals and snacks) without sacrificing your favorite foods. I also share how I handle my own nutrition during weight loss phases – and why I rarely struggle with hunger.
In this episode, I cover:
Calorie deficits (and why they inherently cause people to experience hunger) [3:25]
Why I believe hunger isn’t necessarily a bad or wrong thing when someone is on a weight loss journey [7:15]
Hunger cues *sometimes* mean your body needs something other than food [8:45]
The importance of accepting that the process of losing weight is often uncomfortable and will require sacrifice [10:35]
Creating a new mindset around hunger and deciding how you want to approach it [13:30]
The primal, non-intuitive nature of hunger and how our instincts make it challenging to not eat when we feel hungry [15:30]
Why a long-term calorie deficit is NOT a good idea [18:00]
What I recommend for someone who struggles with binge eating and/or those who have been on restrictive diets for a long time [21:30]
How your relationship with food dictates the ways in which you handle your hunger cues [24:20]
Why eating adequate protein can help you feel more satiated [26:10]
The role dietary fats play in helping you feel fuller for longer [27:25]
How adding more fiber to your diet can increase satiety [29:00]
The benefits of focusing on meal timing and nutrient timing [29:35]
How eating high-quality, nutrient-dense foods can help reduce hunger [34:30]
Why staying hydrated and getting enough sleep are key for combating hunger [36:15]
